The
commission on Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems addresses the
ecological role of groundwater in rivers, wetlands, coastal and
terrestrial environments. The new GDE commission provides a worldwide forum for those
researching and managing the positive role aquifers play in
supporting ecosystems.
We
aim to:
-
Promote
a wider understanding of the ecological role of aquifers and
the impacts of groundwater abstraction to decision makers.
-
To
provide a forum to promote, link and coordinate research in
terrestrial, aquatic and marine Groundwater Dependent
Ecosystems (GDEs) between IAH members.
-
Link
IAH to other organisations active in ecohydrology (UNESCO,
LOICZ, IUCN) and related disciplines.
-
Potentially
attract a new group of groundwater scientists to IAH/AIH
